Delazon Smith settled in Linn County in 1852 and was one of the first United States Senators from Oregon, elected in 1858. The letters are to his brother. They refer at length to the question of statehood for Oregon.

Delazon Smith came to Oregon in 1852, and settled in Linn County. He had political ambitions, served in the Territorial Legislature, and, with Joseph Lane, was first United States Senator from Oregon, elected in 1858.
